Frequently Asked Questions
What made you interested in writing?
Reading! I’ve always read a lot, but sometimes it’s hard to find a book that’s exactly what you like. That’s what made me start writing – to find a funny, quirky book; something I wanted to read.
Do you have to do a lot of research?
Even though I write fantasy, its important my worlds feel as though they might be real. I watch a lot of you tube videos – especially ones about knife fighting and archery. I read a lot of books, too. I have pinned links to some of my research material on my Pinterest boards, so if you’re interested in archery and so on, take a look. They’re pretty cool!
What would you say to unpublished writers?
Read. Read a lot. Read the great books, the old books that people still love and discuss, not just the fast-moving books at the bookstore. Learn the craft of writing – I have some tips set out in my blog.
And write, of course.
Will you read my manuscript/book/article?
No. I’m not trained as an editor or an assessor. And I am seriously time-poor. Better to get someone qualified.
Who are your favourite authors?
Here’s a list of the top fifteen. (I tried to cut this to ten, but I just can’t.) I’ve got a top one hundred too, but that would go on a bit. This list isn’t in order; these folk move around depending on new books that I find and the mood I’m in.
- William Gibson
- Patricia McKillip
- Neal Stephenson
- Neil Gaiman
- JRR Tolkien (how could a fantasy writer not have JRR?)
- Terry Pratchett
- Ursula Le Guin
- Diana Wynne Jones
- Roald Dahl
- CS Lewis
- Edith Nesbit
- Connie Willis
- Douglas Adams
- Sherri S Tepper
