For me, a trip away isn’t a holiday unless I’ve got something to read. True confession: I’m a crazy-fast reader. Before the days of e-readers this was a real pain, as half my suitcase was full of books.
The only problem I have now is finding a book I like. I prefer sci-fi and fantasy, not too dark; romantic but not cliched. Not an easy mix. Oh, and it has to be well-written. I don’t care if the book is old or new, and I don’t care that much about the cover. But it absolutely must NOT be boring.
This last trip I got lucky, and found 6 books that met this exacting criteria.
Six NOT-Boring Books to Try
The Cruel Prince by Holly Black. A fantastic urban fantasy/fae read. I did find the first person present tense irritating at first, but persevere, because once the novel hits its stride its like: “Oh man!” The story is wicked and cruel and fascinating, all at the same time. Highly recommended.

A Pocketful of Crows by Joanna M Harris. This little treasure of a fairy-tale retelling is gorgeously illustrated. If you can, read the hard cover print version, NOT the kindle. It’s not a long read, more a novella than a novel, but sometimes it’s a relief to read something a little shorter.

Haunting Charlie by Wendy Wang. Perfect for fans of The Medium, this paranormal police procedural is escapist reading at its best. There’s 4 books in the series too, so it’s a good book to try if you’re looking for something to binge-read.

All Flesh is Grass by Clifford D Simak. Classic sci-fi at its best. Nothing happens in Millville – until one day, Brad Carter drives into an invisible wall, and discovers that he, along with everyone else in the town, is trapped. (This was written in 1965, way before The Dome). This is a fast-paced and entertaining read and at 260 pages, it’s very concisely written.

Find Me by Francesca Riley.I’ve just started reviewing for Scoop, an online news site, and this was my first read. Find Me doesn’t have the best cover, but if you’re into YA fantasies featuring star-crossed lovers, this little story is as fast-paced and addictive as Twilight, with (I think) better characters.

Echoes by S. P. Blackmore. An entertaining sci-fi romance about memory, aging and lightspeed. What happens when we can no longer trust our memories? This is a light read, don’t go looking for hard sci-fi in this story, but I found it interesting, and I enjoyed that the story was written from the perspective of both male and female main characters. Also, it has a gorgeous cover.
